Somerville Doctor to Change Sexes

The otherwise mediocre Somerville Journal has a relatively positive article today about a Davis Square based family physician who recently announced a major change in his practice. In a letter to his patients, Dr. Roy Berkowitz-Shelton announced:

After almost 18 years of practicing medicine in Davis Square, I am looking forward to many more years as your family physician. There will be only one major change that will occur in July - I will begin practicing medicine as a woman.

The article has some pretty positive quotes from patients who, though shocked with the announcement, seem pretty satisfied with him and plan to continue using Dr. Deborah Bershel (his new name) as their physician. The only somewhat negative comment comes from the doctor's father who, while "heartbroken" still "love and support" their son.

This is a positive change fro the Somerville Journal who, in order to keep up with their muckracking opposition often turn the most benign stories into stupid controversy. Of course a story like this is ripe for controversy, and when I first saw the piece was afraid I'd read a quote from ArticleHate pledging to boycott Davis Square. Kudos to the Journal for laying down just the facts, and avoiding needless controversy.
