Lost Cash in Somerville: At Least It's Not Uranium
There has been a lot of chatter in Somerville recently about thefts and misplaced items within the Police and other city departments.
First there was the theft of $6000 to $9000 from the Traffic and Parking department back in late 2005, followed early this summer by the announcement that a clerk in the Police Department had accidentally thrown out some $31,000+ in seized cash. Then there was the rumor (still not confirmed) that not only was the cash thrown away, but also $5000 worth of stolen jewelry taken by the cops in case currently being prosecuted.
In the end, no charges were ever filed in either case, and the Police realized it would be impossible to find the accidentally disposed-of cash in the middle of a huge landfill in New Hampshire. I concur with Mayor Curtatone that, "It's infuriating, it's unacceptable and it better not happen again."
This all reeks of incompetence, but hell, at least it's not Uranium.
