Socialists Take On Capuano
Apparently it’s true. I just took a look at my sample general election ballot on wheredoivotema.com and was shocked to see that Socialist Workers Party candidate Laura Garza is running against Incumbent 8th District congressman, Michael Capuano.
Despite the fact that I’ve never heard of her nor did I know she was on the ballot, it seems that Garza is quite a force in U.S. Socialist politics. According to her Wikipedia entry, Garza was the Socialist Workers Party candidate for U.S. Vice President in 1996, garnering an astounding 8,463 nationwide.
I really don’t understand why someone would but the effort in to gathering all the signatures needed to get on a ballot as a super-minor party candidate in a race that she is unlikely to get any attention. At least Grace Ross in the Governor’s race is a Green (a party known nationwide) and is included in most debates and articles, getting some real attention for her issues even without a chance of winning. What’s the point of Garza’s efforts if even political junkies like me find out at the last minute that she’s running?
