U.S. Border Patrol in… Somerville!?
Last week the organization I work for in Somerville had our Annual Meeting at the Holiday Inn on Innerbelt Road in East Somerville. For those of you who don’t know, Innerbelt Road is about a block from the Somerville-Charlestown border (where Cambridge Street in Charlestown turns in to Washington Street in Somerville).
As I pulled up to the hotel to begin setting up for our meeting, I noticed this official U.S. Government vehicle prominently parked in the front lot.

What in the Hell was the U.S. Border Patrol doing in Somerville? My first suspicion was a humorous assumption that, perhaps Mayor Menino has called in the Big Guns to protect Charlestown from Somerville.
Then a more ominous thought occurred to me… perhaps these guys were in town to talk with the Governor or to train State Troopers about enforcing immigration laws.
Shit. Just remember… it’s only a matter of days before we get our new Governor.

Perhaps Border Patrol mistook the warehouses, deteriorating roads, and utter pale of despair around the Somerville/Charlestown line for, oh, a patch of some former socialist state breaking away from the Republic? Macedonia, maybe? Perhaps they’ll just turn that all into a parking lot for Logan one day when it’s been 100% forsaken.

New governor, huh. I once had an acquaintance who referred to Massachusetts as the “People’s Republic of Massachusetts”. And what does anyone up there know about border problems? I live 75 miles from the border and in Arizona miles, that’s a short distance. It’s easy to be a liberal up along Massachusetts Bay.
