Shouldn’t *realtors* know the city borders?
I understand there are a lot of students around these parts who don’t know where Cambridge ends and Somerville begins, but one would expect the professionals renting them the apartments to have some idea.
Notice anything odd about this apartment listing on Craig’s List?
Recent renovation! Nice place with gleaming hardwood floors, an eat in kitchen, and an overall great location.Located in the Inman Square Area of Somerville, 12 minutes to the T. Avail 5/1/2007 (Reference #123979)
Perhaps the error has something to do with the 707 area code listed as the rental agent’s contact number.

Boris says:
This probably just means it’s on the Somerville side of the border, near Inman Sq. She’s not saying that Inman Sq. is in Somerville…
Jesse Kanson-Benanav says:
yeah, boris, i think that is the case. but the problem with that logic is that there really is NO Somerville side of Inman Square. That’d be Union Square.

What about three steps past the Abbey Lounge towards Johnny’s Foodmaster. Waldo, DImmick, Wayatt streets are all in Somerville but would probably be identified with Inman, not Porter or Union, right? There’s a 58 year old woman who works with me who lives on Springfield Street (100% in Somerville) and identifies herself as living in Inman Square. If you’re saying that Somerville doesn’t officially have a “Inman Square” neighborhood you’re right – but they don’t have a Union Square either – they’d both be in “Ward 2.” I wouldn’t get bent out of shape on this but I’m not sure I follow your logic.
Ron Newman says:
You can walk about 100 feet out of Inman Square and cross the line into Somerville. The Abbey Lounge is an Inman Square business that is located in Somerville. So I don’t see anything wrong with the listing.
be says:
Ron Newman’s absolutely correct. I live in Somerville and work in East Cambridge…what I’ve noted on my (wicked pissah) pedestrian commute is that the border between Camb and Somerville is about as exact as that ‘warlord territory’ between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I agree that the listing is correct. You can throw a stone from the center of Inman Square and hit Somerville. It is right on the border and perfectly appropriate for Somerville residents to say they live in the Inman Square area.

I know her! She used to work with me at Portrait Simple and left to do the realty thing. How funny. Small town.
