No offense, its trashy to let your kid pee on the street. I understand that there aren't many restrooms in Davis Square but come on how many restaurants would turn down a three year old kid to use the bathroom. I still think that letting your child pee in public like that is in bad taste. I understand that under some circumstances I guess you have no choice but what if this was a ten year old kid doing the same exact thing. Anyways funny story though now that were on the subject of public urination. Before I moved to Cambridge I was living in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn NY. For those of you unaware with this part of NYC its essentially like Somerville. Its a former working class neighborhood across the river from Manhattan where over the past few years has been gentrified because of its cheaper rent. It is also every hipster from the midwests dream come true to live there . Not to go off topic but alot of the locals in Brooklyn are getting violent regarding gentrification. I wouldn't be surprised if something crazy goes down that way especially since Flatbush a historically black area is trendy. I was reading that Pudd Daddys mothers business was pushed out by the yuppies. I am from New Rochelle originally which was historically a working clas Irish/Italian/Jewish town and how Trump is coming in trying to build a tower so even the suburbs aren't safe.

Anyways, I was living in the basement of a rowhouse pretty close to this bar called Duffys. It was Friday at around noon and as I am watching TV when I begin hearing a dripping noise. I look up and its someone going in my window. I thought it was either a homless guy or some of the neighborhood kids. I walk out to give this person a piece of my mind and I see a thirty something looking guy in a buisness suit. I said bro, you just went to the bathroom in my window and he says well I had to go. I was kind of shocked because this was a thrity year old yuppie who you would figure would have the respect to at least do it in an ally. So anyways he looks at me and just walks away and I was left with a huge stain of yuppie pee on my couch.

Um yeah, we'll teach the children to "sacrifice." Hey Sonny, you want to go out in public? You're 3, that's old enough to be able to perform surgery to remove your bladder. I don't want to speak for Jesse, but I don't think he's advocating that the kid be taught discipline, as in show a normal human emotion and you'll be beaten, you pansy, more that he thinks the kid should be escorted to a public restroom, problem is there aren't very many in that area, especially not for free, especially within walking distances for tiny bladders and little legs. Look, here's reality, if there is no public restroom around, sometimes you can either let the kid go on the street or you can't stop him from going on himself, because he can't hold it. Now obviously that's wonderful in the sense that the wet 3 year old bastard will suffer the pains of diaper rash that he deserves, ha ha justice is served, um but do you want to sit on that seat on the subway or the bus after the kid gets off? Ah, but the parent should suffer the inconvenience she deserves by being barred from the public transportation--jeez I hope she doesn't have to carry the wet kid, the dry kids, the groceries more than 10 or so miles or I bet somebody has to go the bathroom and oh no, back to square one!

I think all of you are missing a very important point that he is trying to make. If you don't teach your kids discipline at a young age then they will continue to act this way. I remember when I was growing up and fell of my bike, my father said to me "If your gonna weep keep it from the sunshine". Many trendy parents would say my father was bad because he wouldn't let me cry. I would argue different, he was a guy that grew up in the worst part of Yonkers and was a tough as nails. If he didn't teach my brother and I discipline at a young age then we probably would always expect him to bow down to us. Also I think its important to teach children whats acceptable and not acceptable. I am sorry peeing in public is just crude and rude. God forbid we teach our children how to sacrafic a bit or even worse god forbid the parents get inconvienced.

When I was traveling in China it was very common to see children peeing in public. This was true not just in the country but in big cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. I saw it happen right outside a restaurant on the street. I also saw parents holding small children over trash barrells. Many children don't even ever use diapers in China. They wear split pants which are just what they sound like...pants completely split in the crotch and when they have to go they just squat down wherever they are and go.

The kid's three, for goodness sakes. If he were 33, that would be a problem. Kat's right, there simply aren't many convenient public bathrooms in the area, and that goes for large parts of Somerville and Cambridge and Arlington. Banks and stores dont generally have rest rooms, and restaurants won't let you use them. And it's even worse for girls. Please stop being so self righteous, Sorry margaret. Yeah, if your kid can't get through the excursion, hope that you're not too poor to hire a baby sitter--you want to pay for that? How about buyimg a car, that will zip you around quicker. And after that, buy them a magic wand so they can teach their toddlers how to defy 3 year old biology. Kids don't like going to the bathroom in public any more than adults like letting them, but sometimes there's simply no alternative, if you're in the middle of nowhere with no options for miles.

I think Be has a point with the nationality thing. In some indiginious cultures it is acceptable to urinate in public. Like in Revere.

While I try to avoid having my sons pee in public, when you're 3 your bladder is very small and your needs are great. And having walked through Union Square with a 3-year-old, no, there is no easy place to pee quickly, especially because you have at least a 2 minute wait to get to the pizza shop if you don't beat the walk signal. Try carrying a child who has to pee and your bags from Market Basket across Somerville Ave and Washington Street. You'll think the electrical box is the better option too.

At three years old your child should be able with your help to wait until there is a place for him to pee. He should know how to do this because you should have taught him. And you should have made sure before he left the house that he could get through your excursion in comfort.

It is never acceptable to allow children to urinate or defecate in public. Never. Part of learning how to live with other people is learning to do those things in an appropriate manner. If you don't teach your children to do that you're failing them in a very fundamental way.

Since you obviously have never had a three year old, here's what probably happened. "Mommy, I need to pee."

From there you have about 20 seconds to the child peeing in his pants, and consequently on the ground around him. You can try to bring your kid into a restaurant, but most of them will tell you to go F*ck yourself before they'd let a non customer use the bathroom.

So, given those circumstances the electrical box was probably better than his pants and the sidewalk below him.

Just sayin...
