What is Question 2?

This November in Massachusetts voters will be faced with ballot Question 2, an effort to legalize “fusion voting” in the state. Fusion voting, otherwise known as cross-endorsment, is a system underwhich candidates for elected office can be endorsed by more than one political party. The votes that a candidate receives on each ballot line are counted separately, but then ALL of those votes are added together. For example:

Sample Fusion Ballot
Steady Sue appears twice on the ballot, once as the nominee of Major Party 1, and once as the nominee of the Good Jobs Party. The votes that Sue receives on the two ballot lines are counted separately, but then ALL of those votes are added together. EVERY vote counts, and she wins with support from 52% of voters — with the Good Jobs Party having provided the winning margin.

Question 2 is spinach for democracy. It makes your vote stronger. It’s good for democracy and it’s good for you.
